Learning, made clearer.

A few answers to help you find your next step.

Getting started

How do I begin?

Choose Get Started on the home page. When registration is open, enter your email and follow the link to choose a password. If you already have an account, choose Login.

Choose a course from the language picker, then start its available learning path. Course coverage varies; paths marked In preparation are not ready to study.

Choose a language

Can I change my pace or language?

In learning setup, choose your language, reason for learning, experience, and lesson size. Your experience choice describes your starting point; it is not a placement test.

Settings lets you change lesson and review sizes and choose which languages appear in your learning and review queues. Save your changes before leaving.

Lessons and reviews

How does Word practice work?

When Word practice is available under Your practice on a course dashboard, choose Quick practice for up to five words or Longer practice for up to ten. The session may contain fewer words if fewer are ready.

New words show their meaning before you try them. Returning words ask you to recall the meaning or type the word you learned. For that second question, use the taught word rather than another possible translation.

After each answer, read the feedback and choose Continue. Practice more words starts another batch of the same maximum size when more are available. Content credits are available below each word.

Can I retry words I missed?

At the end of Word practice, choose Practice missed words to try only the words you missed in that batch. Each retry adds a new attempt; your original answer stays saved.

To return later or on another device, choose Review missed words under Your practice on the course page. It shows currently available words whose latest saved answer was incorrect. A later correct answer removes the word from that list.

Missed words also return to scheduled practice after ten minutes. An early correct retry does not push the next review further away. The end-of-batch retry list lasts while that page remains open.

Can I set a daily practice reminder?

On your course dashboard, open Add a calendar reminder under Your practice. Choose a first day and daily time, download the file, then open or import it in your calendar.

Confirm the time zone and alert settings in your calendar. Edit or delete the recurring event there to change or stop it. Importing the file again may create a duplicate. These notifications come from your calendar, not from Brickstone.

What happens in a vocabulary lesson?

Read the introduction card, then click it or press Enter to begin practice. Choose a translation or type an answer. Correct answers move you forward; an incorrect answer shows the correction and a chance to try again.

A word completes its initial learning steps after its introduction and two correct matching and two correct typing checks. Completion means you finished those checks, not that you will remember it forever. Reviews bring learned words back for practice.

Why are there no reviews available?

Your review queue contains learned words that are due now, within your selected review languages. After a review, its next date changes. All caught up means there are no cards due in that queue at the moment.

If an expected language is missing, check your review-language choices in Settings. Use Check again on the review completion screen to refresh the queue.

Open vocabulary review

Can I do a shorter review?

When more than five vocabulary words are due, the course picker offers Short review: up to 5 words. It uses your selected review languages and respects a smaller session size in Settings.

Finishing a session does not clear the rest of your queue. Return to your courses or choose Check again when you want another session.

How is kanji practice different?

Reveal a character to see its meaning and readings, then choose Start practice. Kanji practice mixes six learning checks across cards. Some cards include a related vocabulary example.

After the learning checks, the first scheduled review is four hours later. During a scheduled review, indicate whether you remembered the card or need to relearn it.

What if my progress will not save?

In Word practice, keep the page open and choose Retry saving answer if confirmation fails. The retry sends the original answer. If the word changed, the question expired, or your session ended, follow the message to reload or sign in again.

If a vocabulary lesson shows a saving error, keep the page open. Check your connection, then choose Retry saving. The lesson waits for saving to succeed before completing or exiting.

Vocabulary lessons can recover a pending answer after reloading the same tab when browser storage is available. Keep that tab open until saving is confirmed. Closing it or clearing browser storage can lose unconfirmed work.

Lessons that show a saved-step count resume from the last confirmed step. A response draft can be restored in the same tab for up to 24 hours when storage is available; submit it to save it with your lesson.

How do I report a problem with a review?

Choose Report Issue on a vocabulary review card. Select the problem type and describe what happened. Include the answer you expected when reporting a rejected answer.

Submitting a report records it for review; it does not immediately change the question or its accepted answers.

For reports submitted from Word practice, open Your reports to see the current status and any message shared by a reviewer. You can also find Your reports in Settings. Check that page for updates.

My dictionary

Where can I find words I practiced?

On your course dashboard, find My dictionary and choose View all. Search by the word or its English meaning, then use Previous and Next to move through the results.

Choose Save word to keep a practiced word handy. Select Saved words only and Search to find those words later. Remove saved word clears that choice without deleting your progress or note. Refresh the search to update the list. Saved words belong to your account and appear in your learning-data download.

Words from Word practice appear after you answer a question. If that version is replaced or withdrawn, its dictionary entry is hidden. Practice an available replacement before it appears in your dictionary. Your original attempts remain saved.

Choose Practice this word on a Word practice entry for a one-word session, even before it is due. Afterward, practice it again or return to the dictionary. Early correct practice keeps the existing due date. If the word has changed, return to the dictionary to find the current version.

How do private notes work?

Open Add a private note under a word, enter your memory cue, and choose Save note. Only your account can see it. To remove a cue, clear its text and save.

Save to keep your note in your account. When browser storage is available, an unsaved draft can be recovered in the same tab for up to 24 hours. It does not sync to other devices. If a save cannot be confirmed, reload the dictionary to check. If the saved note changed, compare it with the recovered draft before choosing Use draft in editor or Discard draft. Using a draft does not save it automatically. If the tab reports that recovery is unavailable, copy the text before leaving.

Notes on Word practice entries belong to the version you practiced. They do not automatically move to replacement content. Your learning-data download includes saved notes, including notes for versions no longer listed.

Audio

How do listening questions work?

When a lesson includes a listening question, play the recording, then choose an answer or type the wording requested by the question. You can replay it before choosing Check response. For listen-and-type questions, follow the taught spelling, including accents and punctuation. The transcript appears with your feedback after you submit.

Your original answer stays saved if you retry after a connection problem. Review saved steps lets you revisit the feedback and transcript. These results describe that attempt, not mastery of a language.

What if I cannot hear a listening question?

Choose Read transcript instead to read the recording and continue. The page explains that this is assisted practice before you choose it.

Using the transcript marks that response as assisted, including after you reload. You still receive answer feedback, but it is excluded from the saved lesson’s unassisted score. A new lesson attempt starts separately.

If the lesson is no longer available, return to the course and choose an available lesson. Transcript assistance cannot reopen removed content.

Can I slow down a recording?

Where Normal and Slow (0.75x) appear below a recording, choose Slow to listen at three-quarter speed. Choose Normal to return to the original speed. Selecting a speed does not start playback.

The selection applies to the current player and stays selected when you use Retry audio. A new question or step starts at normal speed.

Can I record myself saying a word?

In Word practice, open Say it aloud while studying a word or after answering. Choose Record my voice and allow microphone access, then Stop recording and use the player to listen back. Recording stops automatically after 30 seconds.

Where a reference recording is shown, listen to it first, then record yourself and compare the two. Playback pauses while you record, and playing one clip pauses the other.

This is self-practice without a pronunciation score. Clips are not uploaded or saved to your account. Discard recording, closing the section, or leaving the step clears the clip. Moving the page into the background cancels active recording. If microphone access is unavailable, you can continue practice without recording.

Why can I not hear a card?

Check your device volume and selected headphones or speakers. If pronunciation is available, select its play button. Browsers may require a tap before they allow audio to start.

If a player shows an error, check your connection and choose Retry audio. If your login expired, sign in again. If the recording or lesson changed, return to the course to load its current content. For a listening question, Read transcript instead provides an assisted way to continue when available.

Some cards have no recording. Kanji pronunciation may use a Japanese voice available on your device when a recording is not available.

Can I turn sounds off?

The Sound effects switch controls interface sounds. The automatic-pronunciation control inside vocabulary lessons separately controls whether card pronunciation plays automatically. You can still select the play button on a card when audio is available.

These choices are saved in that browser. A different browser or cleared browser storage may use the defaults.

Your account

Can I change my login email?

When Change login email is available in Settings, enter your new address and current password, then choose Send confirmation link. Open the message at the new address and choose Confirm email change. Your current login email stays active until you confirm.

Confirmation signs out all devices. Log in with the new email and your existing password; your learning progress stays with the account. Links expire after 30 minutes. Requesting another eligible change replaces the previous link.

Settings shows the pending address and expiry. Choose Cancel pending change to stop it before confirmation. This keeps your current login email. Cancellation cannot undo a change that was already confirmed.

A security notice is sent to the previous address. Billing contact details are managed separately through your payment provider. If the option is unavailable, email changes cannot currently be requested from Settings.

How do I sign out my other devices?

In Settings, find Other devices, enter your current password, and choose Sign out other devices. This browser stays signed in. Your other sessions lose access on their next authenticated request.

This action does not change your password. After too many attempts, wait 15 minutes before trying again.

How do I recover my password?

Open Login and choose Forgot password? when that option is available. Enter the email associated with your account, then follow the email link to choose a new password.

Account links expire after 30 minutes and can be used once. If a link is expired or already used, request another. Check your spam folder if the message does not appear.

Resetting your password signs out your existing sessions. Log in again with the new password.

Open login

Where can I download my learning data?

Open Settings and find Your learning data. Choose Download learning data to save a JSON file containing your saved profile, preferences, progress, and learning records, including recorded transcript assistance.

The file identifies what is included. Billing records, course content, recordings, and browser-only preferences are not included. Keep the file somewhere private because it contains your account information.
